What I do.
The best designs are not necessarily those that wow you from the shop window. They can’t always be found in aloof design boutiques in downtown anywhere, where wit and fancy often trump depth of insight.
The best designs, I believe, are those that first perform a function reliably and intuitively, and then use all communication-mediums afforded them to convey a consistent, appropriate, holistic solution.
To say that an industrial designer exists to “make it pretty” is analogous to calling a fireman “the guy with the water.” A “good” industrial designer understands the complex and often contradictory needs of engineering, manufacturing, marketing, the environment, and the oft-forgotten consumer, and has learned by trial ways of bringing all of these elements into accord.
By this definition, I’d say that I am not “good” yet, but I’m working toward it every day. I do hope you like my stuff ![]()
