2004 HP Internship

During the summer of 2004 I was given the opportunity to intern with the Hewlett-Packard mobile computer industrial design group. While there I briefly touched a number of products in various phases of the design process, and was also given the opportunity to design an entire “lifestyle” solution for the 2007-2008 time frame. My goal was to push the current ID language forward three to five years, and to explore possible new ways of thinking about computing in the home. This program was much broader and deeper than I am able to show here, because we explored many ideas that are now being pursued. These images, however, give a flavor for the overall product system in terms of styling and industrial design.
For more information on this projuct, please arrange a phone call. I would be delighted to expound!
I’m often asked how much of this design is “mine.” I’ve never seen a good design that was accomplished by a single person unassisted. My experience at HP was the first time in my life I was given not only an assignment, but the means to complete it with excellence. We used the full strength of the resources at my disposal–fellow designers, engineers, model makers, our Alias guru, a model-making consultancy, and eventually a professional photography session–and I think the results show it. If you ask my boss, Kevin Massaro, he’ll tell you that the designs are very much my own. I did the research, the design, the development, the refinement, and directed the 3D and model making. But without HP, I couldn’t have done any of it.
